Intervertebral Disc Infection




Abstract
Recently we have experienced 5 cases of intervertebral disc infection since November in 1969 at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University. Pyogenic intervertebral disc infection is relatively rare inci¡þdence of comparision with osteomyelitis of the spine. In 4 cases recieved surgical intervention the causative organisms were staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and proteus mira
bilis. The another one case was received conservative treatment with broad spectrum antibiotic and cast immobilization. The surgical treatment was performed with radical curettage and anterior
intervertebral body fusion with autogenous iliac bone graft. The postoperative treatment was carried with specific antibiotic medication for 6 weeks and cast immobilizatization for 3 to 4 months. The end
result after treatment of all cases was considerably. favourable course and all cases were returned to previous ordinary activity since 6 months after operation.
